It's Match Day!
In Ethiopia, where everything is a challenge, among few
things that remained real is St George. St George did not become a history. It
did not stop on "it was". It is only our St George that is still on a
route it created yesterday before ages. Many clubs could not stand founded
later than St George and on better times.
We have a club founded at Arada by youngsters who were ahead
of time. When football was new to
Ethiopia, it was us who made the Ethiopian football carrying goal posts from
fields to fields, making lines with chalks, wearing sweater as jersey and paid
popcorn as a signing fee of players.
We thought football's ''A B C D'' spending from our pockets.
When Blacks and Whites were different teams because of color, we stood for the
impossible, humanity. Using football for freedom, we waved the Green-Yellow-Red
flag on Addis Ababa before Emperor HaileSilassie the First and declared our
freedom.
We are champions of Ethiopian Premier League 14 times. After
the league was reformed, we are the only ones with absolute domination. It is
us who represented our country in the stages of Africa and took the league's
title 4 times uninterrupted. We transformed Addis Ababa stadium's cheering from
a boring one to a choreographed mosaic. It is only us who conquered the hearts
of many teaching art with love.
St George's historical journey cannot be belittled by few
who are misguided. It does not go down by name calling. Built by 80 years of
great struggle in the sport, it will not diminish for false acquisitions. As
history cannot be made by talking, it will not be destroyed. St George's
victories will not be less because misfortunates try to make it less. St George
is a teacher for Ethiopian football. The only one that did not fail in
Ethiopian football is our St George.
St George will have its Ethiopian Premier League week 21
match today at Addis Ababa stadium against Ethiopia Coffee with kick-off 10:00
pm.
