It's Match day!
When we plan to travel long distance following our St George, the days get longer. We begin our long awaited journey to show our love in all stops on our way as we are St George ambassadors. We move following St George that made us close with each other more than a family, to concur hearts with our attractive songs not leaving any icons at home to decor cities with our bright colors wearing our yellow, red and orange jersey and scarves on our necks and decor our cars with our flags.
(We don't frustrate to follow Sanjaw anywhere, we have faith we will win it proved victorious in many counts)
Singing this, we are travelling to the historical city,
Gondar, to back our St George. Speaking of Gondar, let's say few about the
precious St George man who relates St George and Gondar.
Mengistu Worku is our hero who became a king in Ethiopian
football born in Gondar, 'Quara' 'Yoftahe Giorgis' in 1940 GC. From his father Fitawrari Worku Sinke and his
mother Mrs Emawayesh Abetew.
Fitawerari. Mengistu Worku played in St George wearing no.8 from 1959-1974 GC. He never wore another jersey other than that of St George's. Mengistu Worku started playing for the Ethiopian National Team since 1959 during the 2nd African Cup. He played for 13 years since 1959 to 1971, 98 times holding the high scorer recorded for the N-Team till date with 61 goals.
Mengistu was a very successful player who gave his
everything for St George without holding back. He served the club he loved as a
player. He achieved great success in his no.8 jersey. He helped a lot being 2nd
coach. He earned much respect as a main coach. For his timeless service his
no.8 jersey is kept high reserved not to be worn by another player in St
George.
Mengistu Worku did not play for money. He did not play
because he was paid or because it was a job. He once said this when he was
asked about St George.
"I have never been paid when I was playing for St
George. And it was scary to ask. On top of that, the club doesn't have any
source of income. What makes you play is the people's love. I could not part with the jersey to leave the club. How
can you leave after helping it reach here being wounded and bleeding for it?
So, I have never been lazy because I was not paid let alone ask for
money."
"It was nice if we had food on match day, other we have
to borrow to eat. This club's establishment is amazing, it came from nothing.
It would not have made it here if it was not for the leaders' strength and the
fans' courage. For example, when I joined, we were not even given 10 cents for
bus fair on game day when we play at Addis Ababa. I have always walked to and
from the match places.”
"Sometimes we come eating lunch at home. But there is
no food after a match. For instance, being that tired after a match and walking
all the way back to Gulele, if am late for School's dinner, I go to bed
drinking only Gulele's water. Since I have joy playing for St George and being
satisfied with our victories, I don't mind sleeping with empty stomach.”
St George will play EPL's 2nd week postponed match today at
3pm at Atse Fasiledes Stadium against Fasil Kenema.
